Cafe Philo NY is cordially invited to be part of the live audience for THE TAIWAN SHOW featuring your host, Jenny Wang! THE TAIWAN SHOW aims to educate different audiences about various aspects of Taiwanese identity and activism.

On this episode, we dive deep into the United Nations Membership for Taiwan/Keep Taiwan Free movement and took a look behind-the-scenes of the annual event as well as about the struggles and triumphs of individuals involved.

Sit tight, and hold on to your bobas! We got a great show for you!

【入聯運動介紹-- ABOUT THE MOVEMENT】

Keep Taiwan Free

Despite being one of the world’s youngest successful democracies, Taiwan continues to be excluded from the United Nations. Among many consequences, that means Taiwan is unable to fully participate in and contribute its resources to global institutions such as the World Health Organization and forced to enter international competitions under the name of “Chinese Taipei.”

The United Nations Membership for Taiwan – Keep Taiwan Free annual event has become a well-known event for many residing in the Greater New York Area.

This movement started in hopes of gaining UN membership for Taiwan through the Committee for the Admission of Taiwan to the United Nations (CATUN). The main goals of the event are to promote Taiwan’s inclusion in the international community, and to Keep Taiwan Free to exercise universal values such as human rights, democracy and self-determination for the 23 million people of Taiwan.

Although there are no legal obstacles for Taiwan to join the UN, Taiwan has constantly been rejected in its attempts to join international organizations due to political opposition. The organizers and supporters of the event wish to inspire others to ignite change and awareness regarding Taiwan’s recognition in the global community.

【ABOUT JENNY WANG 】

THE TAIWAN SHOW 是 Jenny 最新的專案。

Jenny Wang has been heavily involved in the Taiwanese American community for several years. She is a prominent figure in the United Nations Membership for Taiwan/Keep Taiwan Free movement. Jenny also focuses on inspiring the next generation of Taiwanese Americans. She is a co-founder of Outreach for Taiwan, a grassroots organization to educate about Taiwan by providing information and understanding about the political atmosphere, current events, and historical relevance of Taiwan. In addition, Jenny is a former program director of Taiwanese American Next Generation, an annual program that cultivates and fosters the next generation.

THE TAIWAN SHOW is Jenny’s newest project. THE TAIWAN SHOW has been to Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Student Association’s MidWest Conference 2017 at the University of Michigan, as well as Fieldston Ethical High School in New York City. She is looking forward to bringing THE TAIWAN SHOW to Cafe Philo NY, as TTS’s third live audience!

【ABOUT ALEX CHANG】

Alex Chang is a Taiwanese American who is passionate about preserving the way of life that the Taiwanese have fought for for the past 50 years in a transition from authoritarian rule to a young democracy. In order to do so, he strives to shape how Taiwan is viewed through various efforts like Passport to Taiwan - a summer festival celebrating Taiwanese culture and heritage, Taiwanese American Next Generation - a summer retreat to empower Taiwanese-identifying youth, and Keep Taiwan Free - a movement to engage the global community about giving the 23 million Taiwanese a say at the international level.

Did you know there are many values that the Taiwanese and Americans share like freedom of speech, press, and assembly as well as an emphasis on human rights?

Alexs hope is that one day everyone will recognize Taiwan as a country and that people won't question his identity when he identifies as Taiwanese American.
